We strive to follow the Scriptures as closely as possible.
About the CHURCH OF CHRIST
Biblically:Jesus said He was the church builder, not man (Matt.16:18). We view Him as the head of the body (Col.1:18), a role no man can fulfill. Thus we do all things with His directions and principles in mind, from the Scriptures (Col. 3:17). Fifty days after His resurrection He started His church, recorded in Acts 2. It has existed ever since, despite opposition and world changes. Entrance into Christ’s church comes about when one obeys the gospel. God Himself adds people to it (Acts 2:47). One must believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, understanding how these events provide us with forgiveness from sin. Repentance and baptism (immersion) in water for this forgiveness, based on faith in the working of God, is also necessary. (Acts 2:38; Col.2:12) Jesus unifies all nationalities into one body of people, His church. (Eph.2:13-22)
~Locally:The south Edmontonchurch of Christ began in Sept. 2006, the fulfillment of many years of planning by the Inglewood congregation in the north-central region of the city. About fifty people from that group formed the new congregation, many of them already residents of the south side, primarily in Millwoods. We are an autonomous congregation under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, although we cooperate with our sister Edmonton congregation in love and good works. After three years our membership has grown to about 80 people. Southwood Community League graciously allows us to rent their hall every Sunday for our church assembly. This includes Bible classes for adults and teenagers, and various children’s age groups at 10:00 am., and a one-hour worship period at 11:00 am. Our aim is not just worship, but to learn God’s word though systematic study, and to strengthen each other by fellowship.
Nationally:Churches of Christ have existed in Canada since about 1810 in the Maritimes with the immigration of members from Scotland. Soon congregations formed in central Canada, then moved west as the country opened up. Our early churches in Manitoba produced many gospel preachers who planted new churches on the Prairies. British Columbia and Alberta saw their first congregations in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Today churches of Christ exist in nine of our ten provinces and in the NWT. Although distances are great, our churches are very involved with each other and always stand ready to help with any needs (Acts 11:27-30). Our Alberta congregations are located in greater Edmonton, Camrose, Lloydminster, Red Deer, greater Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. Recently a new congregation began in Fort McMurray.
Internationally: Churches of Christ span the world, existing in most countries. In the United States our membership is about 2.5 million and there are about 13,000 congregations in North America, including Mexico. Our Central and South American churches are numerous, as well as those in the Caribbean. Our European churches are a mixture of very old congregations and new efforts in many communities, as we are in Mediterranean countries. Our presence in many African nations and India is very strong, the result of years of mission work and medical-mission projects. In Pacific-rim countries, we have a strong brotherhood in the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and New Guinea. We also have a growing presence in South-east Asia. Jesus commanded Christians to make disciples of all nations, which we humbly do.
